5.6 La Navidad en Mexico: Las Posadas

Following is a reading from La Navidad en México about the cultural tradition of Posadas. 

 

Según la Biblia, Jesú nació en un pueblo pequeño que se llama Belén.

According to the Bible, Jesus was born in a small town called Bethlehem. 

 

Su madre y su padre, María y José, no podían encontrar un hotel para pasar la noche cuando llegaron a Belén.

His mother and his father, could not find a hotel in order to spend the night when they arrived in Bethlehem.

 

Habían muchas personas en Belén para un censo, y no había espacio en los hotels ni las posadas (posadas son como hoteles pequeños).

There were many people in Bethlehem for a census, and there was not space in the hotels or the posadsas (posadas are like small hotels).

 

Por eso, muchas personas en páises que hablan español celebran "Las Posadas" desde el 16 de diciembre hasta el 25 de diciembre.

As a result, many people in Spanish speaking counties celebrate Posadas from December 16 until December 25.

 

Grupos de personas van a tres casas diferentes.

Groups of people go to three different houses.

 

Hablan con las personas que viven en las tres casas y preguntan si hay espacio para José y María.

They talk with the people who live in the three houses and ask if there is space for Joseph and Mary.

 

Las personas en la primera casa y la segunda casa dicen que no hay espacio para José y María, pero la persona en la tercera casa dice que sí tiene espacio.

The people in the first and second house say that there is no room for Joseph and Mary, but the person in the third house says that yes they have space.

Entonces, el grupo de personas canta canciones de Navidad, entran en la casa y tienen una fiesta con una piñata.

Then the group of people sing Christmas songs, enter into the house and have a party with a piñata.
